"Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow. And it happened, as he sowed, that some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds of the air came and devoured it." — Mark 4:3–4 · NKJV
"And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts." — Mark 4:15 · NKJV
Wayside soil is the hardened ground of the worn path where seeds cannot penetrate and remain exposed to birds. The soil has been packed hard and growth damaged by foot traffic — it has no openness to receive what is sown. The seed cannot penetrate. The soil's relationship with the seed is that of hardness, dismissiveness, and indifference.
The opposite of wayside soil is a heart that actively receives — this is the whole aim of Strategy 2: HEAR, the practice of opening yourself to God's Word until it takes root rather than bouncing off. You'll practice cultivating receptive soil hands-on in our STRATEGIES 1 Training.
